This day provides an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer – including America’s more than 18 million cancer survivors – to connect with each other, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have supported them along the way.

Where is the Celebration of Life 5k Walk/Run?

The First Annual Certified, Timed Celebration of Life 5K will be held at E. Carroll Joyner Park in Wake Forest, NC on June 2, 2024.

Why is the Celebration of Life 5k Walk/Run important?

As of January 2022, it is estimated that there are 18.1 million cancer survivors in the United States. This represents approximately 5.4% of the population. The number of cancer survivors is projected to increase by 24.4%, to 22.5 million, by 2032. According to the NIH, individual supportive care needs include psychosocial/emotional, physical, health system/information, family-related, social, interpersonal/intimacy, practical, daily living activity, spiritual/existential, patient–health professional communication, and cognitive needs.  This event supports survivorship programs that contribute to the needs for the survivor population.

I am not a runner, but I would like to participate.  Can I do that?

Don’t worry, you don’t need to run or even walk if you’re not up to it. What’s important is that we are supporting each other, creating awareness and celebrating the lives of cancer survivors. You can make your impact by fundraising in your own way. Post on social media and invite your friends to follow along and join you in the fun.

However you take action, you'll spread love and directly support cancer survivors. Share how you're making an impact by posting a photo on social media and let your voice be heard by sharing your story or your reason for participating in this event.

TEAMS

I would love to put a team together.  How does that work?

We love teams and would love to see your team on June 2.  Corporate teams, survivor teams, organizational teams, family teams – we love them all.  Register your team members online and join us at the event all decked out with your team spirit.  We also give awards to the team that does the most fundraising, so gather the gang together, and let’s support survivors!  Need help?  Check out the steps below.

  1. Pick a Team Leader.  The biggest way you can help is by becoming a team leader. But what exactly does that mean? Being a team leader means you're responsible for recruiting teammates, setting fundraising goals, and organizing fundraising activities.

  2. Recruit Members - Invite your friends, family, and coworkers to join in. Send emails, post on social media -- whatever it takes to build your team. And remember the bigger your team, the more fundraising you can do, and the bigger impact you can have on cancer survivor programs in your area.

  3. Set Your Fundraising Goal. Make a plan with your team. Set your group and individual fundraising goals and strategize fun ways to reach them.

  4. Raise Money - All you have to do is ask. Seriously. Send emails, spread the word via social media, and start a Facebook Fundraiser. Plan a virtual group fundraiser, or a bake sale, or even a yard sale!  Anything your team is spirited about, plan and raise!

  5. Finally – CELEBRATE AT THE RACE!  Celebrate all your hard work and join us at the park while remembering the powerful impact your team is having on cancer survivor programs!  And remember, the team with the largest amount raised takes home the prize.
